zakharleyxavier brings the carnage on ‘Confidence’

    By Tom Meenagh

Zakharleyxavier's new release, 'Confidence,' is a remarkable entry in the alternative rock genre and demonstrates a masterful blend of tension and release. This tightly wound piece infuses grit, drive, and shimmer into a sound that feels both familiar and refined, contrasting sharply with his previously released EP, Volume 1, which showcases a more stripped-back and experimental approach. 'Confidence' serves as a striking moment of escalation, prioritizing gritty, high-impact releases.

The song opens with a reverby, gain-soaked riff complemented by tight, punctual drums, creating an inviting yet sparse introduction. This classic bait and switch draws you in with a tidy guitar line and a rhythmic pulse that teases what’s to come. The track then catapults into the stratosphere with its bashful chorus chord progression, delivering a swift and exhilarating shift that clearly establishes the song’s intent. An overlaying glimmer of higher-end phrasing weaves in with the vocals, enhancing the texture and preventing the arrangement from getting bogged down in fuzzy guitar progressions or feeling one-dimensional.

As the song revisits its intro riff, now with added bass, it maintains a sense of forward momentum without losing its identity. A middle eight introduces a slight variation on the heavy, driving chord progression, filtering out to create a moment of controlled descent. This dynamic contrast is essential, allowing the song to breathe and avoiding a claustrophobic feel, which leads to a complete tonal shift. The music momentarily cuts out, leaving a clean, reverbed guitar playing finger-picked chords with added bends in a soothing denouement.

But the calm is short-lived. Just as you think the song is winding down, it erupts back with driving fuzzy chords and forceful drum crashes, shattering any sense of security. This marks the anticipated crescendo, infusing the track with a nagging insistence that demands some 'gusto'—a call for 'CARNAGE.' The imagery evokes the excitement of mosh pits, underscoring the energy that 'Confidence' embodies. The twinkly background phrasing returns, creating a shimmering ambiance that aligns perfectly with added backing vocals. These seamlessly weave in some of the verse lyrics alongside the choral reiterations of the title, 'Confidence,' resulting in a richer arrangement that starkly contrasts with the stripped-back introduction, highlighting the track's evolution.

If I had one critique for this alternative rock anthem, it would be that it doesn't venture too far out of its comfort zone. It adheres closely to its blueprint without reinventing the wheel. While songs in this genre might benefit from structural diversions to keep things fresh, 'Confidence' embraces a precise sense of direction and self-assurance (WINK NUDGE) in its strengths. It reinforces the idea that sometimes, less truly can be more, and here, it undoubtedly proves to be the case.
